Sasha Ryabushenko was born with critically high bilirubin levels, spent a long time in intensive care, and underwent two full blood transfusions. The family hoped that after this health complication, the child would be spared. However, when Sasha was one year old, doctors confirmed her diagnosis of cerebral palsy, which felt like a sentence.
Despite the neurologist's disappointing prognosis, Sasha learned to sit up on her own and later to move around on the floor and walk with support. At age 4, she began speaking in simple sentences; by age 6, she started school, and this year she successfully completed the 9th grade. Sasha is happy, friendly, and sociable. However, she lacks live communication, as she has been studying at home for the past 4 years.
This winter, Oleksandra's physical condition and speech deteriorated significantly: seizures and dystonic attacks became more frequent. She choked on saliva, could not swallow food, and had difficulty breathing. Numerous medical examinations failed to determine the cause of the seizures, and doctors prescribed medication.
Specialists believe that the cause may be generalized dystonia. If the tests do not confirm a genetic abnormality, the only treatment option is surgery to implant electrodes in the brain. Now, Sasha needs the assistance of an occupational and speech therapist. Please help the girl receive treatment at the Rehabilitation and Neurophysiology Centre!
